The Junior Division
The Delran Junior Marksman Club was founded in 1962 for the express
purpose of teaching firearm responsibility, safety and marksmanship to youth
from age 10 to 18 years.
Throughout each year, three Junior Programs are offered: Air Rifle/Light
Rifle, Service Rifle and Trap. Sign-ups for the programs are
held every Saturday in October from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the Delran Junior
Marksman Range located off Taylor’s Lane in Delran, NJ.
Juniors may sign up for one, two or all three programs. For information
on fees, please visit our
Membership
link and download our
Junior Application. All instructors are NRA certified. As previously
mentioned, our primary goals are to instruct youth and adults in firearm
responsibility, safety and marksmanship.
Instruction and practice, for Junior Members, is held on Saturdays from 9
AM through 12 Noon. The fee for each program only partially covers the cost of
materials and supplies. Income from Senior Memberships and operation of the
shooting range on weekends is used to offset the costs associated with the
Junior Programs and helps to keep the programs affordable.
Air Rifle/Light Rifle
is our basic program, where most junior members begin. It consists of the
National Rifle Association Air Rifle Course, with classroom instruction
covering firearms responsibility, safety, familiarization, proper handling,
sighting and shooting positions. Target type air rifles and pellets are provided
and utilized for our basic program. We do not use BB's as they ricochet too
easily. Shooting mats are also provided for the prone position along with
spotting scopes and other required equipment. Junior members are personally
responsible for eye protection. Ear protection is not required for the Air
Rifle portion of the program. Our basic Air Rifle Program is
instructed mostly indoors.
The Light Rifle portion of the program utilizes small bore, .22 cal.
bolt-action target rifles. This program is taught and practiced at the Delran
Junior Marksman outdoor range, off Taylor's Lane in Delran, utilizing our
fifty-yard rifle range and shooting at paper targets. Again, ammunition,
shooting mats, spotting scopes and other required equipment are provided. For
the Light Rifle portion of the program both eye and ear protection is
required and is the personal responsibility of the shooter or junior member.
The Service Rifle program
is offered to Junior Members who have completed the Air Rifle/Light
Rifle program. The program is taught at our outdoor rifle range. The club
provides high power rifles, ammunition, spotting scopes, paper targets and other
required equipment. NRA Certified Instructors provide individual, one on one
instruction. Eye and ear protection is the personal responsibility of the
shooter or Junior Member. Juniors who participate in this program are encouraged
to participate in the CMP High Power Service Rifle Matches, which
are held four times each year at our range. They are also offered the
opportunity to shoot in state and national NRA sanctioned matches.
The
Trap
program
is a modified trap-shooting program. Junior members learn to properly handle and
shoot shotguns to break airborne clay "pigeon" targets. The club provides both
12 gauge and 20 gauge shotguns and ammunition. Eye and ear protection is the
personal responsibility of the shooter or Junior Member. As always,
responsibility and safety are paramount. Our NRA Certified Instructors provide
safety training and individual instruction.
